ATI x1900 or nvidia 7900

For my conroe build i was planning on the nvidia 7900 but then i learned that intel 975x chipset doesn't support sli which i would eventually hope to have, so i decided to go with the x1900 and eventually have crossfire. Is it possible to have sli on the 975x even though it doesn't support it? is either crossfire or sli better than the other?? is either video card better than the other?? (i will be using the computer for a lot of gaming and recording tv via media center edition) whatever help you guys can give me would be appreciated because the ATI is $50 more than the nvidia, and as i am already at my budget limit without the processor added into the equation i would really like to spend less money but if it sabotages my having a sweet computer, i will just spend the extra money.

i would stay away from the 7900 i've heard nothing but bad things about them (mainly the stock cooling on them goes out) if you can replace the fan on it it might be worth while but in my opinion the x1900 is still a better card

In order to use Crossfire on the motherboard, it must have an ATI chipset.

ATi and Nvidia cards differ in their ability to play certain games. ATi is better at some games then Nvidia, and same for Nvidia. What types of games are you playing?

If I had to choose between SLI and Crossfire, it would be SLI. It has been around longer and it feels like Nvidia really has the whole dual GPU thing down.

crossfire is more flexible though

Why you say that? I am building a new PC sometime next week (finally) and I not totally sure if I should go nVidia because I am reading that their cards break!

I am looking for the most badass system I can make and this SLI/Crossfire thing has been going crazy! Between deciding that and the/or waiting for the Conroe! Doh!

I have always had an ATI card but their drivers have always got the best of me. I have no experience with nVidia so I wouldn't know. But I heard the 7950GS2 is amazing (Which is what I might end up going with).

most games i will be playing are things like age of empires 3 and brothers in arms and stuff like that, not the most graphics intense games but eventually i might be getting more advanced games.

Which 7900 (GT or GTX), and which X1900 (GT, XT or XTX)?
What will it be paired with (i.e. the other components in the system)

The 7900GT would be more than enough for that.

Really? With Crossfire you have to buy a Crossfire Enabled card and a normal card with SLI you need two normal cards. I think 2 normal cards is a bit easier.

either the x1900GT or the 7900GT. ASUS p5w dh deluxe motherboard, antec neoHE 550 power supply, 2gigs corsair xms2 ram, and the conroe e6400 or e6600; I would like to eventually get dual video cards when i get the money but could i do sli even though the motherboard chipset doesn't support it?
