ATITool

Ok, so i downloaded this the other day and want to overclock my GPU, but it doesn't tell me the temperature. Is there any program that can find out the temp of your GPU while windows is on? Also what sort of temp is safe for a GPU? Should i buy an additional cooler if i am going to be using this tool?

I have an Asus Radeon 9550 128mb graphics card.

Your video card might not have a temperature sensor. In ATITool you should be able to find your temp in the Hardware->Overclocking Settings, just under Artifact Tester.

be CAREFUL

i killed a x600 and my first x1300pro tinkering with clockspeed and bios

i know people say be careful when doing a lot of things, but video cards are EASY to mess up.

and the cards change so often, so even if you have two cards you bought on the same day, from the same store, they could have different bios, so make sure you back yours up, and save it.

and having a $20 pci video card is a good thing to have as well, in case something does go wrong (found this out the hard way)

Most likely if it doesnt display the temp, then it doesnt have a temp sensor.

And its hard to mess up a video card if you only change the speeds. If you raise them too much, your screen will get messed up, and/or blue screen and restart. But once you restart your computer, it will be perfectly fine (unless you have it set those clocks on startup).

that happend to me. my screen flickered and then my comp restarted. when it had booted up it said settings are restored to defaults

Would you recommend some additional cooling is needed or not?
Also on ATITool do i just leave 'find max core' running on its own for about an hour or so on its own, then stop it and leave 'find max mem' on for an hour, or do i have to change things while this is running?
EDIT:And when do i do the artifact scanning?

Please, somebody????

I've been on the wikipedia site, but that doesnt explain it clearly enough!

Well i don’t know much about overclocking but i did overclock my card just a little.
Raised it a few MHz from a whopping defauly 398 MHz to 407 MHz:D and it was fine,No artifacts.
I just wanted to see if my card would overclock because when i launched the ati tool it said my card couldn’t be overclocked as its locked against overclocking or something but it did overclock.

I left it at that because i also have no way of monitoring the temps on my card either.
No temps show so i wouldn’t go ahead and overclock if you cant watch the temps.
