auction software?

I need to build an online auction website. How would I go about doing such a thing? Im pretty savvy at web design in general but when it comes to major scripting and programing i hit a wall. Im assuming there is an easier solution out there. some sort of software perhaps.

Im on a bit of a tight budget so free is better but i am willing to dish out a few bucks for something if its going to get the job done.

does anyone know of anything like this?

I would suggest that you first look at SourceForge.net. Search for "auction". If nothing comes up that interests you, start looking for content management system, CMS. Many popular and free CMS have a plugin interface. If the CMS does not have an auction feature built-in, someone very well could have made a plugin. Overall, you may choose to use a CMS as your "site" and separate auction software along beside it. good luck.
