Audio editing

I need a very good, professional program for editing audio; adding effects, removing noise etc.
Which do you suggest?

Thanks, but I'm looking for something professional, and since this is free it doesn't guarantee state-of-the-art results.

Anyway, I basically need it for removing noise from some very old songs I have which I imported from a vinyl disk into my PC

I just downloaded Audacity, how can I decrease the noise from a song using it, anyone know?

Edit -> Select All
Effect -> Noise Removal
Do step 1
Effect -> Noise Removal
Do step 2
Save your fixed .wav

Well that is what I use Audacity for, doing what Ovenmaster said. The only thing that I have found is that the bass gets lowered. So you might want to boost it a bit. But for free software, Audacity rocks.

Load your .wav
Edit -> Select All
Effect -> Bass Boost. Experiment with a COPY of your .wav to see if it works to your satisfaction.

PS! Always work with COPIES of your wav files! Never delete your original wav until you are TOTALLY satisfied with your final results!
