I am running XP Professional. The Pc will not shut down it automatically restarts again.
I have reinstalled XP and down loaded all updates. This cures the problem, but as soon as i receive updates the issue starts all over again.

That's probably due to not having the "when I press the power button on my computer" option set to shutdown. Instead you may be leavng it set at restart. By right clicking on the desktop you go to the "Screen Saver" tab in the center to open that section up once the properties screen appears.

At the bottom right click on the "power" button there to enter the "Power Options Properties". Once that next screen appears click on the second tab to open the advanced section and look at the bar at near bottom there. That should be set to shutdown.

Thanks for the info, however I have tried what you said and the problem still persists.
I have been reading a few things lately and the problem may be that upsates are required on Hard ware. What is the easist way to update all hardware ie motherboard Disc drives etc.
Thanks Again

Have you gone to the MS update page lately? You'll notice there are two ways to download and install the latest. One is usually what everyone chooses which is the "express" while if you look over the "custom" you can see separate choices for Windows, Softwares, and hardwares. Otherwise you have to go to each devices support site to look for updates there.

The updates for the board are found at the manufacturer's own support site like Asus updates would be at http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us The next thing to look at would be the setting in the system bios for power management there. If it isn't set for "user defined" Windows will go through all of the shutdown steps while the board itself is still powered up. Review the manual for the board and check that setting.

Try to turn off the "when the OS fail ,restart the computer"

It may help

XP has it's own crash control for auto restart of the system if a program hangs. This is more of problem with the power management If the bios is set to user defined then Windows itself has a glitch in that area.

can anyone help!!!!!. Problem still persists.
Can I damage my machine by switching it off just as it is about to re boot automatically????

Besides a hard shutdown on the drive it would have more effect on the mbr and boot sector which would be software. When there something was hanging Windows up here I've had to do that on occasion. But that was only temporarily until the problem was corrected. One thing that could you now until the problem is solved is a freeware called Superfast Shutdown 1. This will unload everything quickly and shut the system off automatically even at a scheduled time. http://www.download.com/SuperFast-Shutdown/3000-2094_4-10419804.html
