I'm wondering what a recommended video card would be. I'm building a new system (well... almost. Huge Upgrade). The most graphically intensive software (games not included) would be the student version of AutoDesk Inventor (3D CAD software).

I'm just looking for recommendations. I'm not looking to spend a hugh amount of money, because I'm upgrading my motherboard (to P5K3 Deluxe), memory (DDR3 of some kind... have not decided), and CPU (Q6600).

* Performance increases at low power
* Longer battery life in laptops
* Enhanced low power features and thermal design

Disadvantages compared to DDR2

* Commonly higher CAS Latency
* Generally costs more than equivalent DDR2 memory

lol, ddr2 had the same merits. Have you ever seen benchmarks comparing ddr2 to ddr1? The performance difference is abysmal, even when the high latency of ddr2 was finally worked out. Benchmarks showed that speed And latency had much less of an actual effect than everyone thinks, around the grounds of 10% or so. DDR3, IMO, is just like DDR2, a means to sell new motherboards, and Thus Chips and etc.
 
It might not be the best performances for now, but we'll need to upgrade to ddr3 soon, so even if u say u have no avantages, it's only whining, because u'll upgrade to ddr3 anyway.
 
Well, I'm have not really set a budget... and the DDR3 is just because I want the P5K3 Deluxe motherboard.

I kinda need the DDR3, because I can't jam a stick of DDR or DDR2 into the slots of my motherboard. I mean, not like I don't agree with what you guys are saying, but I'm stuck with it.

I was looking at the 8800gts on newegg... there are tons of them. I don't really know what's what when it comes to video cards. I can manage to figure out what is compatible with my system, but I don't really know what I need, or if it is enough.

I'm not a huge gamer, but I'm considering getting a nice graphics card for some of the new DX10 games anyway. How would you rank the 8800 for these uses?

Well I never. Are you accusing me of whining? I happen to think of it as beneficial defiance. If everyone just lays over and dies then who's to stop Mr. Industry from doing this more and more, How would you like it if a new GPU slot was brought out just as fast as new RAM is? Or a new CPU socket? :D

Just caving and accepting it as inevitable is pouting. I don't pout I whine... :confused:

Mystery. the 8800gts are great cards at the moment, but whether or not they'll be able to hold their own when Dx10 hits full swing is unknown. I say they'll be adequate, kind of like my 7600gt. Can play anything I want at almost high, but just so. No slack whatsoever.
 
For me sounds like u'll need to upgrade, also wait, it just came out, it'll probably get better in a couple months better speed and everything.
 
Alright... I guess I kinda sidetracked this thread by mentioning DDR3. I don't need "Oh-my-God-is-that-guy-real?" settings for games.

Also, I don't plan on doing my upgrade until winter (maybe the day after thanksgiving... I don't know if new egg has big sales too.) I'm just kinda planning.

Yeah, but who knows what will hold up under DX10. I just don't want my card to be overwhelmed if I get a good game. If I were to get crysis, I don't wanna have to run it in low settings. On the other hand, I don't need the ultra-high settings either. It's just that I know the medium settings for DX10 games will be way higher than that of most games on the market now.

Well you said that you're going to be upgrading in Winter, so they best advice anyone can give you is not to make any decisions now and to just wait and watch. Prices will fall, mysteries will be revealed and your decisions will become much easier.
