Hey guys.
When I activate Automatic Updates (AU), it makes "Generic Host Process Win32" or something like that crash on startup, making the computer slow and no access to the internet. So I deactivated them for now, but the new Norton I installed is bugging me about it. How do I

a) Fix why AU is crashing GHPWin32
(b) trick Windows and Norton into thinking that it's activated)

B is a last resort.
 
Norton, Norton, Norton the nightmare tried and removed a long time ago! You can always go directly to Microsoft for updates directly. So it isn't Windows that's causing the problems being seen there. A bad install of Norton and it's own resource grabbing is most likely the cause there. The Host Process Win32 is software related showing Norton or some other program auto loading along with Windows is the source of your problem.

For XP the support section's home page is now found at http://support.microsoft.com/ph/1173 The third link seen on the left side is for downloads and updates. Whether you are running XP or have recently upgraded to Vista the msconfig utility is one tool included in Windows for determining what the offending software is by reducing or totally disabling all installed programs in the startup group.

To bring up the msconfig utility you simply type msconfig at the Run prompt right off of the Start menu and press enter(fast way) or click the ok button. The two screen shots here show where to look for the startup and services groups. Note the option to "hide all microsoft services" box is preferred to avoid disabling any essential background services.

With a number of items if not all temporarily disabled you can gradually see one by one if any of these results in seeing the problem when it is re-enabled. You will have to restart the system to put any changes into effect.
 
No, it's not Norton's fault. It was crashing be4 I installed it. Norton just reminded me of the fact I have deactivated it.

What do ppl have against Norton??
 
My thing with norton is why pay the money for software i can get free on the internet that will not bog my computer down and eat recources... Also in addation to what pc said you can also do a chkdsk/r on your system if you have a windows cd insert it boot to the cd select the repair option it will ask which windows to log into usually its just #1 and there is no password unless your admin account has one then type chkdsk /r i usually run it 2 times to ensure it fixes everything...
 
I came across one thing you may want a look at regarding the Generic Host Process Win32 error you have been running into.

The problem being seen is apparently limited to XP systems with SP2 installed or included with the installation disk. There are several hot fixes and a few articles on this seen at the link there.
