Autorun.inf

Hi newb here. Is autorun.inf a virus? I have a Seagate 1TB external hard drive which contains this file. I have 2 computers one which runs xp the other vista. I don't ever have any troubles using the ext drive on the computer with xp but sometimes have trouble moving files from folder to folder (within the ext drive) using vista. Should I be concerned with this?

Many drives today come with functions that automatically run when you connect the drive. That's probably a configuration file for it. Sometimes it does things as simple as loading an icon, or a complex as running some kind of software.

You're probably fine. If you're really worried, I'd suggest getting yourself a virus scan. AVG Free works quite well.

I would definately scan the drive for viruses or infections. Make sure the drive is plugged in and use AVG and malwarebytes, select full scan with malwarebytes and select the external drive as well as the main drive.

if there is an autorun.inf file in your C: drive you are infected. Autorun.inf is generally found on CD's and DVD's. those ones are safe. but if there is one just hanging in your C: drive it is a virus.

I just updated to webroot anti virus with spysweep and scaned the ext drive. It came back clean. Your help is much appreciated thanks guys.
