avast and norton firewall problem...

has anyone else had problems with running avast antivirus with norton firewall installed.. i still currently have my norton antivirus up.. although its expired.. i figured the more protection the better.. maybe not huh.. what do you guys think..
I've tried to configure the norton firewall to allow the avast.setup to update.. i continue to get a pop up from my norton personal firewall stating that avast.setup is attempting to access the internet (medium risk)... and clicking ok with any option.. allow always, allow this instance or block or whatever only results in the same pop up window.. any suggestions would be helpful.

i think i may have figured out the configuration problem.. seems to be fine so far..
from what i have been reading on here.. it seems that leaving norton antivirus(especially since it's now expired) in addition to avast is a mistake.. ? I will remove norton.. I'll have to locate this Norton removal tool... and see how that works..
Should i stay with the norton firewall... or try another one such as zonealarm?
having norton antivirus expired or removed should have no effect on the norton firewall... correct?
