Avast V5 ---Thoughts---

What is your thoughts on the new Avast v5?

For me, the new GUI is a nice touch. However even with the latest program update: 5.0.396 the Avast icon in the system tray doesn't display. Other than that, it seems to be working just fine.:D

So far Avast 5 been a pain in the a$$ for me. I've even posted my displeasure on the Avast! forum, where there are many more people having lots of teething problems.

Since "upgrading" to Avast 5 on January 21...
1. I had to uninstall and reinstall Java. Twice.
2. I had to reinstall my chipset drivers after SATA I throughput fell from ±130MB/sec to just 4MB/sec.
3. I've gotten 0x80040507 bootup errors three times saying that I should break out my XP Home disc and do a repair installation. Clicking "OK" on the dialog box brought up the password field as normal anyway. Go figure.
4. I'm getting "ESENT" errors in Event Viewer every few minutes:
5. I would say that the A-ball systray icon appears automatically only half the time. The other half, I have to open Avast and click "OK" on the Settings page.

I am this $%#@ close to rolling back to version 4.8. I hate version 5, and I'm not alone.

Ah, good to know. Have you tried doing a repair install or a complete uninstall/re-install?

Since the performance issues are an issue, I wonder if I am still protected as I was with 4.8?

I installed Avast last week due to getting a virus on my rig and Microsoft Security Essentials not doing anything about it...

I like the new look, very sleek and simple...it sorted my virus problem out and seems light on system demands so im happy.

Not had any problems on 7 x64 bit.

A repair install of Avast? Yes, three times! Uninstall and reinstall? Yes, twice. But there's no way I'm doing a format and reinstall of XP unless my PC gets thoroughly borked. I'm keeping up-to-date backups handy just in case.

As long as you keep getting the virus updates, you're still protected with 4.8. But until version 5 is fixed, I'd strongly recommend disabling automatic program updates! (Weird... I have a Vista laptop with auto updates enabled and it never downloaded the version 5 program! Thank God I was able to shut off auto program updates.)

When you get version 5 either through an auto update, or a new executable install, version 4.x is automatically uninstalled and removed from your PC.

After getting repeated problems and errors as I mentioned above, I finally yanked Avast and installed Avira AntiVir Personal.

Avira found viruses that Avast never found in four years, and it only takes 55 minutes to scan the entire computer instead of nearly two full hours. I'm sold on Avira.
