AVG hogs the system, won't allow Kaspersky

I 'm trying to load Kaspersky anti-virus, I had the free version of AVG which I removed through Add/Remove, when I try to load Kaspersky, it shows the message AVG requires to be removed etc.
I suspect that there are remnants of AVG in the register; but I don't want to search and remove anything which may harm the system if it's unrelated to AVG. The alternative is going with the paid version of AVG; but I feel this would be succumbing to blackmail.

Anyone have a solution?

You need to run the Avg Remover to clean this stuff it left behind
