This is probably a very daft question but is AVG necessary if the PC has never and will never be connected to the internet?
Thanks for any advice.

I wouldn't think so. Although, if flash drives are often connected to it, you might do well to run an updated copy of Malwarebytes on occasion.

No, it's not for me. I practically live on the internet. It's for an elderly neighbour who only uses the PC as a word processor and to play games.

Thanks to you all for the advice.

With any connection to another computer there is a risk of infection, whether it's from the internet, flash drives (rather common these days, especially if they attend schools/universities), floppy (heh), CD (well, only if you put it on the disc yourself), etc.
I would say no, you don't need it... But why not have one? It's free. Also check out Avast or Avira, they're better than AVG these days (imo; not trying to start a war here).

It's not a bad idea to have one, however, once installed how is it gonna update if the computer isn't internet capable? My advice would be to not put one on and tell her not to use any usb flash drives or cd/floppies from other people with first making sure there is nothing nasty on them.

There's no reason not to use a flash drive IMO... Just scan it with Malwarebytes if it seems like something could be wrong.
