one of the vids on me computers a .avi file and i can play it on Windows media player, but there's no sound. I downloaded a plug in called Xvid but it didn't fix anyting.

Any suggestions to fix this problem?

Open it with VLC Player. It plays any kind of video and comes with codecs....I think?
