AVI to X Converter?

I have been looking for a AVI converter, and/or compressor.
I have 50 Hours of Raw AVI files, with just about 32megabit/s, or 4Megabyte/s.

Is there an good program wich does compress the videofile to 1/5 of the size without great loss of data? And making it still possible to edit?

I have tested some random program, but non of them had the quality or the size i was lookig for.

Anyone?
 
I cannot see why you would have difficulty finding something. Virtually any format can reduce your avi to 1/5 size with decent quality. You cannot expect to maintain exactly the same quality as the uncompressed video.

Typical hq dvds (mpeg2) run at 6-8 Mbps. You could get same quality with smaller file size with mpeg4. I would have thought your best bet is to go to a compressed avi format. I'm not suggesting you use this codec but some of my Indeo5 avis at 99% quality are only 7 Mbps. Cinepak gives better results but at a significantly higher data rate.

All common video formats can be edited with the right software. Avi is probably the most convenient and compatible, particularly in the freeware apps.
