.avi trouble

I downloaded a video file with a .avi extension the other day from the internet, and for some reason, whenever I play it I only get audio and no video, is there something wrong with the file, or Windows Media player, or one of my codecs?

what are you using to play ?
and yeah media player is lame handling avi's

i've been using windows media player, and i've tried using media portal, but it hasn't found the files yet... can you recommend a good player?
