Back-Up Hard Drive Defined??

Can someone explain to me the difference is using an external hard drive as a back-up and using just a back up drive like WD 300 G where I copy data files onto it.
 
No diff. as long as you know where the backup is. Could be cds, dvds, another 2nd hd installed or a external.
 
As tremmor said the process is the same but with an external you could easily move it somewhere else so that your backup isn't damaged by a fire or something.
