Backing up an OS...

Someone gave me a question and I didn't really know the answer to it, so I was hoping someone could help:

I would like to make a bootable installation CD that is the mirror image of a hard disk.

By that I mean that I would like to copy the entire contents of a hard drive onto a CD with the ability to then install that data on a hard-drive including the OS, additional programs, and all of the settings, much as you can Ghost one hard-drive to another.

The Source system and the Destination system would be identical systems, and in some cases, be the same system.

My idea here is to create a type of back-up CD that will recreate the system that it was modeled from in its entirety.

How can I do this?

Thank you very much.

Puttiing a copy of the OS on a second identical machine is illegal. You will need to purchase a copy of the OS for each machine, unless you're a business with volume licensing.

there are plenty of free OS's out there :)
I assume he means a linux version rather than windows as otherwise I would have expected him to say windows explicitly
