Backing up avi files to DVD-R

I am trying to store/copy two avi files [Size 708Mb, 717Mb = total 1.425Gb] to a DVD-R which supposedly will accep up to 4.7Gb. However, I am just not too sure how. I tried using Windows Media Player, "Copy to CD or device" However, it appears that neither selection available will accomplish this, as the message that appears is, "Will not fit".
I would preferably copy them to a CD-R, but we all know that this only holds up to 700Mb.
My DVD drive: HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GSA-H55N
I don't want to create a DVD, cause that takes an exorbitant amount of time to accomplish. I want to create a data file, yes? How do I simply copy these two avi files to the DVD-R?

I would suggest you use CDBURNER XP if you don't have nero on your pc already.
Or you can alternatively use the Write these files to cd via windows explorer (not sure that will work though) but do not use WMP to burn anything

CDBurnerXP - Wow

Wow! Yeeeee-UP, that did the trick! CDBurnerXP burned 4Gb in 7 min & I reviewed the disk to make sure it was successful as I expected. Yup, it was.

I had already tried "Write these files to cd" to find it not successful. And although I do have Nero, I had tried it to burn a DVD w/o success there. So using it to burn a data disk never crossed my mind. CDBurnerXP was quick & easy! Thank you! :)
