Backing Up before Defragmentation

I'm going to defrag the computer and i need to know what stuff needs to be backed up. Does that mean i just have to burn all of my C: drive and other drives onto a cd, or is there some special procedure to backing up (like with systems files and all that). I've never defraged the computer before because my older brother always does it.

Do you mean a reformat followed by a reinstall of you os?

You don't have to backup your data to defrag your drive/s.
 
I have never heard of a defrag messing up a computer... I suppose there is always a first... If you need to back up back up all essential documents... before you start if you are using windows xp create a new system restore point!

Defragmenting is as safe as anything can be - the fact that you can defrag while still in Windows is testament to the fact that it's not really going to affect your files in the slightest.

Just for the record you should always keep a backup of important documents anyway - many people think "what could go wrong", as I did, but then I lost 120GB of data when my RAID0 packed in - and boy did I kick myself...

damn, a typo on my behalf. No excuse but my lazy typing,
meant to say raid5, you lose 1/3rd of your space for [font=Verdana,Arial,Helvetica]parity. which is not wasted as it would have saved your [/font]120GB of data
