Backing up Computer

I plan to take my Windows 98SE computer (Compaq) and update it to Windows XP. The only problem I can think of right now is that my computer has a seperate "Compaq" drive with drivers and other things like that. I'd assume I would have to format my harddrive before installing XP, thus losing those drives. I believe those are the files my friend told me that I would need to have for the computer to have sound and such. What am I supposed to do?
Thanks,

What model Compaq is that? If it's too old the driver updates may not be available. However the current 98 drivers used will become useless with the upgrade of versions. You will to locate the XP versions at the HP support site for that model for board, onboard video if used, and sound. With XP's hardware profile process and favor to new and fresh partitions you should plan on backing up anything important before going ahead with the upgrade.

I wouldn't worry about drivers... Windows XP should detect most, if not all of them, and I've never had trouble finding drivers, even on older PCs.

There are free tools available that will specify the makes and models of the hardwares installed. XP doesn't always auto download needed drivers. You would have to right click on an item and try the update driver option to see if the auto search finds the ones needed. That can work at times with older systems. But you may still have to locate some 3rd party site for driver archives. One free system information tool is Resystinfo found at http://www.snapfiles.com/get/ReSysInfo.html
