So my computer's hdd's finally gave out after 6 years of no problems. And its time to re-format them. However, i have around 80+GB of music and movies id like to back up.

On my moms computer has a burner, so i decided to try to set my HDDs (one at a time) as slaves. However, when i booted up the computer....it doesnt recognize them... I doesnt say anything about them. But when i go into the BIOS settings, it sees them...what gives?

Thanks

check jumpers set to slaves.

and when you say they "gave out" what do you mean? if they really "gave out" you wont be able to get the data back without sending the drive to a recovery service, which can cost upwards of $300.

well...while booting...it gave me the error of...lets see if i can remember this...

The following file is either missing or currupt:

and it gave some system32 config file...i cant remember the path..

then the OS is just shot up. boot up a windows install CD and go to recovery console and type

Code:
chkdsk /r

(on the old computer with the busted drive as primary)

YA know if you're HDD does dies, you can just take the disk out and stick it in an identical drive with identical firmware and it'll work just fine. Usually it's just the logics board that goes. :D

No. it simply checks the operating system for missing, broken or otherwise corrupt bits of data and restores them. All your settings/information/porn are left alone. :)
