Backing Up Files from a Windows 95 Acer Laptop

my boss wants me to back up some old files from his Windows 95 Acer Laptop. as you can imagine, i believe the only way short of removing the HD is to do it via Serial cable. it's USB 1.0, and as far as i can tell there are no thumb drive drivers for anything before Windows 98. no ethernet port so setting up a quick network is out of the question. i don't have an external HD or CD burner to work with, and i imagine they wouldn't run anyway? some of the files are up to 10mb, so floppy disks are out of the question too, and random floppy disk format errors no matter how many times i reformat the disks.

so i'm using XP's Files and Settings Transfer Wizard, to attempt to transfer this stuff via a Serial cable. it's approx 60mb worth of files that need to be moved. everytime i run the wizard, everything is going fine until it starts transferring. it seems to freeze up randomly, in a different spot each time, but usually early between 5-25% completion.

is there anything i can do? any freeware out there that may do the trick? as far as i can tell Windows Files and Settings Transfer Wizard is just bad software. please help, i'm trying to get this done by tomorrow.

thanks for the reply. are there any other possible solutions that don't involve me buying hardware? i don't think he wants to spend any money on this.
