Backing up PST files

I am trying to back up my PST files from my work laptop, but I get the message that access is denied. This is a work laptop, but I need to give it to IT for some updates, and sometimes it comes back missing files and e-mails, so I want to back up my documents and Outlook.

The computer is running Outlook 2003, and I tried to both drag and drop the PST files onto an external drive, and I tried to copy nad paste the files, both resulted in the access denied message.

yup, and make sure outlook is not running when you are "draggin and dropping".
so by going to file-->import/export" that doesn't work ?..odd. :confused:

what don't you do it old skool, just drag all the messages from Outlook to a folder..lol :D, no seriously it works :cool:
 
I tried to drag and drop directly out of Outlook, but got the same message. This is a work laptop, and I was thinking the problem may be a lack of privilige on my user?

very odd.
but why not copy the .pst itself from it's original location ?. i think it's located in C/documents&settings/user/Local Settings/Application Data/Microsoft/Outlook/

Copy the files "outlook.pst" and "archive.pst" from there to wherever you want to backup.

Yeah, that might work. However, I recommend downloading this backup tool from MS. I use it. It works pretty good. :) It was designed for Office 2003, but it works w/2007 as well.
 
If ya dont have access to a commerical proggy for mail backup a sure fire way. install Mozilla Thunderbird then it ask if you want to import from outlook Express.
here is an excellent utility for backing up thunderbird.
Mozbackup which ive used many times.

after that you can burn or backup to microdrive. this proggy will also back up firefox. when the laptop comes back reinstall thunderbird then use the program to replace the backup. after starting thunderbird you will also see the outlook express folders. just copy and paste or drag and drop to the outlook folders. you will see them from thunderbird.

you can also export / import manually at least saving the clients or printing the address book. same with your favorites in your browser.
