Backing up software

i know this is important if you re-format your computer etc. How do you do it where do you take the programmes from on your computer? Which bits do you burn to your backup DVD? From what part of your computer are they stored?

I think before I burned the wrong parts of the software to disc.

You should not backup installed software. Backup is used to save Documents, pictures, media, things that are important to you and that are self contained. They are stored wherever you put them. :P

However if you have any savegame data and whatnot, you should back that up. There is usually a save folder wither in the "My Documents" folder or under the program folder.

Otherwise, don't back up installed programs. just do your documents, pics, music, etc.

Why wouldn't you want to back up software? If I take XP off then put it back on I will need those same programs on again won't I? Nero etc..

You will have to reinstall them from the disk or the files...

A lot of programs write to the registry and they are hard to back up.

As said above, programs will need to be re-installed unless you have imaged your HD. Also use a program like "Driver Backup" that will search your disk for all drivers of every bit of hardware and copy them out ready for your new install.

First of all, that's illegal (not that I care I don't believe in intellectual property) however talking about "stealing software" is against the forum rules..

So We can no longer help you.

Best Regards and good luck,
Francisco
