Bad 920 ever since I got it, 960 is now only 300$.. what do...

WHAT DO?! Advice plox.

  • Get only the 960 CPU and wait for the LGA2011 for new rig

  • Just wait for the LGA2011, investing in a new CPU isn't worth it

  • Build the new rig, LGA2011 will be too expensive anyways

So long story short, I bought a 920 2 years back (D0) but it heats like a piece of sh*t, really just a bad CPU. I went to the extents of lapping the CPU and my heatsink but I still hit 75-80C full load @ only 3.3GHz with my Noctua cooler.

I built my brother the same rig I did and just for fun I put his 920 into my rig and the temps were 10-15c lower, not even lapped or anything so I def got a lemon of a 920.

That being said, I was looking into getting a new rig with the i7 970 but then I read the LGA2011 will be coming out Q3 this year, so I'm not sure I want to dump 2.5k on a new 1366 setup. Now I'm just confused because I thought I would be getting rid of my main workstation for a new one, but this CPU is really ticking me off.

Any advice?

Sandy bridge is legit. With computers, if you always looks to what's ahead, nothing will get done.

If you're looking to get an LGA2011 rig when it comes out, it's probably not a good idea to get a whole new CPU right now. Yeah, it annoying that you CPU is ridiculously hot, but it'll hold you over. ;)

Why dont you just put the overclock down? you are doing a 700mhz or so overclock, some chips just arent as good as others, hence meaning that overclocks just dont work as well.

Thanks for the input guys.

Why is everyone mentionning Sandy Bridge anyways? I thought it was the mainstream version and 1366 was enthusiast?

Plus, there are no 8GB ram sticks out right now which would only leave me with 16GB ram and I was aiming for 24GB with the new setup, although it is nice that the 1155 boards support 32GB memory instead of 24GB on most if not all the 1366 boards (except that crazy eVGA board with 2x 1366 Xeon sockets)

I'm pretty sure a 970 will out perform a 2600K though, but this the 2600K out perform a 960?

Because I need the extra power to speed up my renders.

Actually, Sandy Bridge is so fast that the 2600k outperforms the 970...with only 4 cores! Although LGA1155 is supposed to be the new mainstream platform, it's high-end CPUs outperform 1366. That's why everyone is so psyched for the launch of LGA2011. It's probably gonna figgin pwn. :P

+1.Even I have a hot chip stepping c0 though.
Wait for the 2011 then upgrade rather than now.
And even then you wont have to spend that much because you can sell your old motherboard and CPU and also the RAM(since you need/want more).
And then make a 2011 setup.

Do not worry about having more than 16 gigabytes of RAM. You very likely will not notice an increase in processing power getting more than 4 gigabytes of memory. 4 gigabytes of RAM is a lot of memory.

Might be in your case but I use a lot of RAM. I have 12GB and I regularly get to 100% usage. Right now I'm running my normal applications and I'm at 6GB.
