MoBo bad on Compaq V2000 series laptop. The heat sink rattled loose so I tought the cpu went bad. Replaced and still will not power up. I think it is the MoBo. The laptop has Intel Centrino M 380 processor and 80 gig drive. Really need info off of the hard drive and want to know if I can get another laptop with Intel Centrino M and swap the HDD out?

Will this work? I went to Geek Squad and was told to retrieve the info from my hard drive would be Level 3 at a cost of $1,599...as if!!!!

I need the info off the hard drive, what is the easiest way to do this?

I would really just like to put the HDD in another computer but do not know if that can be done.

Did you pull out the CPU and replace it (it's possible it was just nudged out of alignment), then re-apply thermal paste before putting the HSF back on? Doing that might same a bit of time and save you from buying a new laptop.

But on to the HDD part...

You won't need to go that far. It's fairly easy.

 Did he tell you that with a straight face? If so, that just might warrant a kick in the balls for the guy who said it. What a tool... Don't have the skills to work at a real computer tech place...apply at Geek Squad...le sigh.

It most certainly can be done, and it's quite easy, too! You'll need a 2.5 inch to 3.5 inch HDD adapter to make it work. Once you remove the HDD from the laptop and take it out of it's housing, you can attach the adapter to the pins and then connect it to an IDE cable in your desktop. Then just boot into your desktop's OS and it will recognize the new drive. The adapters can be found very cheaply on ebay. Here's a link to one: http://cgi.ebay.com/Laptop-2-5-HD-t...ryZ31534QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem (I wouldn't suggest that one specifically, since it's coming from Hong Kong, but that's what to look for.) That kind is usually better-suited than the 'card-style' ones since the cable is flexible and you don't have to support the 2.5 inch drive once connected.

Thanks for the Reply....but

Yes I pulled out the cpu & heat sink and d with new cpu and heatr sink and the computer will still not power on.

I did not want to move the HDD to a desktop I want to move it to another laptop. The old system is an intel centrino the new system is an AMD can I swap the HDD or will it not work.
