Bandwidth Problem

I've had ADSL 384KB/s internet connection for a few months but I have never managed to download anything faster that 45-50KB/s, is this normal?
 
(wow extremely fast question answering in this forum)

So ADSL is generally problematic? I've got ADSL at 384KB/s and I have never downloaded anything faster than 50KB/s anyone know why this is?

By the way 'dropkickmurphys' could your PC failure have been a virus or bad antivirus and firewall programs?

it doesn't always depend on the speed of your provider. it also depends on the traffic that is going through to the site you are downloading from, and the speed of their server. if its a slow server, heck, u can probably get 5-10k..

That wouldn't make a harddrive just fail. Also as ^ said, it has to do with where your downloading it also, so...where are you downlioing from? and is that your ussal speeds everywhere you go?

It is not 384KB/s (kilo bytes per second), it is 384Kbps (kilo bits per second).
So your average download speed is 48KB/s (kilobytes per second).

8bits = 1byte
 
40-50k is a normal speed, you take your internet connection and divide it by 8, thats what your download speed should be.
 
OOOOOOOOOH I thought it's KB (Kilo Bytes) not Kilo Bits ok then, so the 2MB T3 internet connection must be extremely fast then.

My download speeds are alot faster then my conenction speed divided by 8.

shouldnt be. the conection is in bits. so say a 2Mb line will be a 2048Kb line. divide 2048 by 8 and you get your max download speed, which is 256kB/s.

What connection do you have?
