Battery Back up thing???

They prevent your system form getting damaged (they're battery powered and keep yuour system running for anywhere from 1/2 hour to 2 hours) if there is a power outage and you are unable to shut it down in time. I believe they can also back up HDD's, but I'm unsure on that.

yea also it provides no chance of a power surge...sorta like a surge protector+more.

yeah, that is a very nice one. but it has a battery that when the power, drops, fails, or spikes will switch over to the battery instantanousaly and use the battery. That is all they do. so 3000 volt amps means you can run a computer and moniter for about 2 hr

I have one to play with... It only puts out about 90v AC so I don't like using it on my machines, but I've stuck it on the router and modem so I had the internet while the power was out ;)

0.o. You only have one and its not on your machine. Its on your router. So whats the point of having the internet if your machine isnt up to surf it? :P.

On topic, as everyone else says. When the power goes out, it gives you a little extra time to shut down. Some shutdown the machine automatically for you.

Thats what I dont get!! LOL Generator anyone? Like in "Live free or die Hard"!!!

well they are nice to have, a generator cant turn on right when the power goes out, you have to turn it ou, battery backups keep your sys running for a good amount of time and save you from lost data. and no it does not give you a few min, most typical ones will give you 30 min or so. And they are great... we have a industrial size one at my office. (it has a battery bank the size of a car and has about 40 car batteries) that thing running, a firewall, 4 large switches, 2 poe, telephones, internet, 4 computers, and a few other things lasts for 8 hr before it dies. so if the power fails, people can still work (on laptops) and have the same functunality as they would if the power did not fail (well for 3 hr on a battery charge)
