i have a hp pavillion lap top it has a lithium ion battery, since i got it it has unusually low usage when it is not plugged in, what i mean is when i am on the go i only get 40-45 minutes of usage, i thought a lithium ion battery would last longer than this.

ive had the hp pavillion zd8000 for just over a year and if its unplugged i only get about 15 mins usage if that! i take it thats why you only get limited warrenty on the battery on most things?
 
Not knowing the model/age, that's probably about right. Over time lithium batteries will degrade and their lifespans will decrease. Many people say it's a gradual occurance, but typically there's a rather sharp drop after a while. Dad's laptop used to fair pretty well, but one day it decided to start only lasting about 10 minutes on battery...
 
to combat battery death, i heard you should 1) run the battery out every once in a while, 2) unplug the computer when off 3) turn off the computer when charging (heard that i should turn off my cell phone when charging, so i figure it would apply to computer batteries as well).
those all help keep what battery life you have, but i dont know about getting it back...

1) Unlike older batteries, lithium batteries do not need to be fully discharged before charging. Typically it's BEST not to fully drain them. However, it's fine to do so every now and then. Some laptops even have a "battery calibration" feature so the machine can better estimate the run times.

2) Lithium batteries have circuits in them to prevent overcharging. Once the battery is charged, this shouldn't affect it. I know my laptop's basically left plugged in all the time and it still does just fine.

3) This might cause the battery to charge more quickly, but that's about it. I do know some devices run off the battery even when plugged in(such as some cell phones) which might be why this is mentioned...
