Battery life

Hi, new here.

I require a laptop that has 5+hours of battery life, because I'm planning to use a laptop for my next 2 years of high school. can anyone recommend models and brands? How long will the battery stay at 5+ and will need replacement? I prefer Apple and sony, but any brand would be fine. thank you. I don't really care about processor speed, but i'd like a hard drive at least 60 gigs.

I've never heard of a battery that can supply 5+ hours of use. If you want any functionality out of your laptop, then you can expect to get much more than 3.5 Hours. I would recommend getting a 12 Cell battery, and get a few spares since if you need 5+ hours of battery power, your going to need more than one.

Look into laptops that use a transmeta processor and have an extended battery pack. I don't know if you could get 5 hours out of one of those, but they'd be your best bet.

so, what do the 12 cells do? do you charge them and then plug them into your laptop? or do you need dry cells?

sorry, new to the laptop scene.

Well many units in the past used to get up to 5hr battery life. I remember my old Dell & HP NX7000 got up to 5.5hrs. But with faster processors, faster HD's & higher temps, battery life has been going lesser. It's a coincidence that you're fond of Apple & Sony, cause Asus makes their laptops, so hopefully you'll like the new A3H and A3Ac. They've got up to 6hrs battery life. Aside from those, there are many systems that will accept dual batteries for extended battery life too.

Basically, the more cells, the longer the battery will last. Don't worry so much about the type of batteries. Basically every laptop battery is the same, just worry about the number of cells and the processor.

how would I install a battery/more cells? would I ask for more batteries installed when I get a laptop?

New post: Ok, just did some research. I'm planning to get either a Sony with an extra battery that can extend it's uses to about 8 hours, as long as i don't play heavy graphics games in school, in which i won't, or one of ASUS's Z71s. any input about which one is more reliable, better, etc etc?

PS: how do spares work? are they built in into your computer or do you have to plug them in seperately?

Were you interested in the Z71V? With the ALS (auto light sensor) built into the display panel help regulates the needed brightness of your screen to extend battery life. You can also use the modular battery for dual batteries to extend it even more when you're now using your CDrom. Just pop it off and insert the battery.
As for which is more reliable, it's totally up to you, I'm sure you'll be paying a premium for the "Sony" label eventhough Asus makes them. I can tell you that the Z71 is made of very sturdy ABS materials- not as nice as the carbon fiber Z70, but it's still very good. Many boutique shops are using the Z71 in their line up too, like VoodooPC, Winbook and a countless others.
Spares- they work just like having spare batteries in your walkman. You pop out the one that drained and insert another one. If you get the modular option, you can use the main battery and insert the 2nd one to work together.

personally I don't like Apple all that much, but in my hometown all the high school kids are getting apple laptops supplied by the government and they all seem to last the whole day from what I've heard

My former teacher's HP-Compaq nc6000 lasts forever and a day. Well actually about 5.5-6 hrs. Very sturdy magnesium alloy construction and is old model sao should be about <$700 refurb.
