Battery Not Present In Windows XP

Hi, i have a year old laptop running windows XP and everythin worked fine on it until about a month ago, whenever i go into the power meter instead of telling me the % of battery power remaining it tells me that the battery is note present, i have tried uninstalling SP2, reinstalling windows and still nothing works does anyone know what it could be?? thanks for any help

I'm not really sure whether this is gonna work but you could give it a shot:

Right click on the Power icon > Open Power Meter > Tick both boxes > close window and see if it works
