Battery trouble - Dell laptop!!

I have a Dell Latitude 610 laptop which has a bad battery. I keep using it on electric power but I continually get "critical battery" popup balloons on the bottom right. Now the computer occasionally shuts down randomly or goes into Standby mode. I tried using it without the battery and it worked fine for awhile before shutting down. I thought using it without the battery would be OK?? Is it or not? Do I need to buy a new battery for it to operate properly? Thanks

Sounds like it might be the power cable instead of, or in addition to the battery being bad. When power cables start to fail sometimes they just put out enough amperage to power the laptop but not enough to charge. It shutting down with no battery might be the result of the power dipping even lower, or it might be overheating.

Running without the battery can be bad, any surge the battery is the first line of defense against damage to the hardware, without the battery you run the risk of damaging hardware.

Actually the power supply is the first line of defense against damage to the other hardware, and if you're worried about that then simply plug into a surge protector. Desktops don't have a battery in between their power supply and the rest of the hardware and it's never a cause for concern.

In fact on some (mostly older) laptops running for extended periods of time while plugged in with a fully charged battery quickly kills the battery life, so it's recommended to run without the battery if you're going to be plugged in for longer periods.

Yeah well I have had the psu short and fry the battery on my asus eepc, so I trust the battery overall.
