Battery verses AC power

On this hand me down laptop, I'm learning the reasons the former owner dumped it.
Can anyone tell me why the XP driven, HP DV2125nr will not start up on the battery?
The battery is good, And I'm using it on battery power as I type this, but I had to plug in the AC power cord before it will start.
I listen to the laptop with a mechanic's stethoscope, it's helped me for years id a problem. It doesn't give me the answer I often need but it opens doors for the answer.

Right now the battery is at 73% and the laptop is working fine so I know the battery is holding a good charge. When I listen with the stethoscope on startup with the battery, I can hear the HD fire up but then cut off every time. When I plug in the AC and hit the on button the HD fires up and spins like it should.

My question is, Is there a setting in battery powered units that is set to only turn on with AC power? Thanks

I would just say you have a faulty battery. Faulty batteries cans till hold a charge but may cause other issues. Would stop using it and try a different battery.
