so my kid tried to stick a magnet toy to the monitor. A 17" crt. And now it has a blue and orangy/yellow spot I cant get rid of. Deguassing doesnt help. Did the magnet win and is my monitor screwed?
A similar thing happened to our family pc's 17" crt. What i did was i degaussed it a few times a day, and then as time went on it faded away. And now you cant even see it.
Someone did the same thing to a monitor at school and to fix it he just turned it on/off several times until it went away, but that may not be very healthy for the monitor.
turning a monitor on/off degausses it. So doing either a lot should fix it eventually. That drill 'technique' was pretty humorous to watch and may be worth a shot if you don't want to wait.
CRTs use electromagnets (called steering coils) to direct the rays to the right area of the screen. Holding a magnet close to the screen can screw up those steering coils. I couldn't explain how that drill method fixes it even if I wanted to but if you figure your monitor is toast without trying something give it a whirl
