Battlefield 2 GPU or RAM

I play battlefield 2 a lot and when I start a game it is verry choppy for about 2 minutes then it runs ok, short sputters every once in a while. I thought it was the ram, but I am not sure now. I have 2 x 512 pc 3200 ram modules and a ati X700 Pro PCI-E card. What is slowing my game down?

check the programs running at the background
and also you might wanna try to free some space on your Primary drive
and be generous when you set the page file

There were some people on BF2 forums that had 1 gig originally. They found it difficult to play large open maps like Gulf of Omen and the Oilfields. PLaces like Karkand and other city maps were easier because there were less vehicles and explosions. Once they bought another 512-1024 ram, they were able to play the game super smooth. They mentioned it was like playing a whole new game with the faster loads and super smooth gameplay. I play on 1 gig, but I turn off AA and other fps killers.

It's the RAM, not the GPU. I have the same GPU, and have it on high settings and it runs just fine. Also, what your describing, choppiness at the start of the game, is caused by lack of RAM. though, choppiness for 2 minutes with 1 gb of ram? I think you have a bunch of crap running in the background

High settings? on what resolution?

He did say that he checked, but just in case. You should always go to task manager>processes and see if there is anything taking up an abnormal amount

Still, it wouldn't help to upgrade the GPU.

I think it would help. I think you might have made a type-o.

Well actually I ran BF2 fine on all maps on the first version. When I updated about 3 hours into the game it froze on me. The next time all the textures were black and for a couple weeks after that it would freeze for about 20 seconds about 1 minute after starting a game in any map. I would notice that the frames would be 'half drawn', exe: no ground or walls missing and other errors. I thought i might have fried my GPU. I wasnt sure, I thought it could be the ram because the update might make it use more, and BTW Karkand runs choppy for me still. 1024 x 768. Mostly medium settings. 2 are on high, dont remember which, i think shadows and terrain. Now that i think about it i am pretty sure my GPU is messed up... I am going to replace it since it is under warranty, and put it in another pc and get a faster GPU for this one.

EDIT: I ran bf2 fine high settings 1024 x 768 no aa about 40-60fps for the first version and before i think the gpu fried.
