On Battlefield Bad Company and Bad Company 2, can you go back to a past mission to get collectibles and such and then return to the saved part which you were at without a problem?

Meaning, say it saves at a certain point in BC but i want to go back to get a collectible, after getting the collectible, can I go back to my saved part without it being erased?

The reason I ask this is because when going back to a previous mission, a box pops up saying

Do you really want to start a new campaign? Checkpoints saved in earlier campaigns will be lost.

If I want to go back to get these collectibles, will I lose my whole saved game?

Hmm to be safe i would copy all your save files to somwehere else and see what happens if you try.
