I have just bought my first pc, and I've been told that someone could get a back door trojan on my computer, and this will allow the hacker to steal all my info, ie, ip address, cc#'s, and surf the net using my name to do illegal things or to surf for bad info on the net.

Is this possible?
 
Yes it's possible, but more likely they'd want to use your machine for mass mailing or to steal your personal details, passwords, etc. As long as you protect yourself (see the link below) and use the web responsibly, i.e. stay away from dodgy websites (cracks, porn etc.) don't open emails or attachments unless you trust the sender, you should be ok.

How is it possible for someone to surf the net with my computer if they're not sitting infront of it?

How does it work?
 
it's not really possible, they could be using your wireless internet connection if you have one, but unless you have a wireless router you won't have that so no worries. If someone hacks into your computer, they need to be on the internet themselves, so it's not like stealing your neighbor's cable or anything

That makes absolutely no sense. I think you need to do some research before posting.
 
what doesn't make sense about it? they can potentially use your IP, but it's not like they are looking though their monitor at yours and surfing that way now is it?

Actually, its not that difficult to view your entire file structure, access all of your personal information, run your applications, etc.. etc..
 
I'm responding to the poster's second question if that's what has you all up in arms, no hacker is going to take the time to break into your computer just to surf the internet using your IP. Personal info and stuff yeah, didn't say they didn't do that. And mass mailings happen too, but that wasn't their second question
 
you could consider having anti-virus software today I was opening a file when the avg-mac both stopped me the computer started ringing coplue of times and said the nest message whe have stopped you from opening this file cause it has forgot name but it was a trojan so try anti if you don't have none

Try using punctuation, it makes reading easier.
 
Thanks for the responses folks, sorry an arguement started, however, I'm still confused if it's really possible or not, and how they do it.
 
well it isn't possible if you get something like norton or mcafee. then it will be pretty hard to break through

If you are suggesting firewalls you need to pay for is superior to others just because of that, thats rubbish. There are great freeware firewalls like Zonealarm. Besides firewalls arent bulletproof, they can be bypassed if thats what your wondering about. Anyway for someone to crack your computer they would either have to get a trojan on your computer like mentioned, but you must trigger it, like open fishy mails and stuff. Or you would have to run a telnet, ftp service or something, but thats not normal for home computers, so relax man.
