Before going on the internet?

I just bought a new Toshiba laptop with Windows 8 and before going on the internet for the first time, I was hoping you could tell me what software protection I should install before going on the internet. I was told one time that many people get a new computer and are so anxious they go right out to the internet and then they are immediately infected. I would like to avoid this if possible. I can download the necessary software from another computer. If possible, I would like to use protection software that is free. Thank you in advance for your advice.

Download Avast free antivirus. As long as you are behind a router, you are fine to connect and download and install antivirus. It was the people that were onl y connecting via modem and no router, that were getting infected within minutes.

just adding to what john said.install avast but since your laptop probably came with a free trial antivirus (norton or the like)make sure you uninstall the one thats on the laptop before installing avast.malwarebytes is another good tool that works along with your av.

Thanks guys. I followed your instructions for both softwares and unistalled the Norton that was preinstalled on my laptop. So if I understand correctly both these softwares are running in the background all the time, right? Also, two more questions: 1.do you suggest anything else before doing alot of websurfing to protect my machine? 2. I have heard of cccleaner. Is this a software I should download and if so is this a software that runs in the background or is it something that I execute once a month or something like that?

Ccleaner doesn't run automatically once you boot up like an antivirus program does. You can run Ccleaner about once a month if you want or once every 2 weeks. What Ccleaner does is delete all your temporary system and internet files so your system speed doesn't deteriorate. You can set it to not delete your cookies or history, all depends on your personal preferences. The only thing I have it set to delete is temp files and empty recycle bin.

As far as Malwarebytes goes, if you enabled the free trial, then it will run automatically when windows boots up. At the end of the the trial you will get a popup saying trial is over. This is when you want to click on end trial and disable it from starting on bootup. You can do this from the icon in the systray(bottom right hand corner by the clock)
