I want to take a part a compac monitor…very excited, all ready have the case a part. I want to break it down in to its smallest components…just for fun. I am a bit concerned about stored capacitance in some of the components and how far down can I disassemble the High Vac tube safely…. And any other safety precautions I should take before I continue. Yes I unplugged it.
 
My Advice : Don't take apart a monitor, especially "jsut for fun." They can seriously flat out kill you...even after being unplugged for a week or more.
 
Really, listen to 4W4K3...... you could really kill yourself, like REALLY. I would NOT recommend you do it.

Are you taking apart the MONITOR or the COMPUTER? there is a difference. Asking because a monitor doesn't have a "Cd" (suspecting CD drive?) in it.
 
I did not mean CD driver...I ment Cd (Cadmium) the element. I work in semiconductors and know that Cd is used in many electronic components, taking apart the computer is no fun ;)

OH, i thought u meand CD (compact disk) lol.

Monitors contain LARGE charges of electricity, which can stay charged for weeks on end even with no power.

if you're really up for it, get a nice thick pair of rubber gloves, a pair of goggles and an old chunky screwdriver with a plastic handle and use the screwdriver to discharge the caps. be prepared for big sparks and maybe a bang.
ive done it before when i was training to become an electrician. i nearly crapped myself when i tried it on a 20,000 uF cap
 
Love the hair, must have been those 20K uF’s I was planning on re-flowing the board, what about that tube….I really want to disassemble that thing (mainly the monstrosity behind the tube) Do you know where I can find a schematic diagram?
 
the hair takes some effort lol.... i was considering using wood glue a few days ago lol.

im not too sure on schematics to be honest, i very much doubt you would be able to get hold of info on specific models.

ive just had a quick look here.... i didn't really do much looking but i hope its helpful
 
Thx for the help, try Garnai Frutise (sp?) hair putty (green tub…careful not to pick up the conditioner which is also in a green tub but different lid) on “just damp” hair and spray with strong hair spray (any brand like Rave) and let the whole mess dry really well before you leave the house.

the ultimate computer geek suicide.

get 20 CRT monitors and have all of them in a row. hold a metal rod over all of them and touch the caps all at once. make sure to setup video recorder and not...saying to post online for me:)

anyways, still planning on doing it? if you do, take pics, i'd like to see the insides as well.
 
well.. you can put a wire to the ground, and touch the capasitor contacts with it. in that way, you discharde the C by grounding it (d'oh :P )
anyway, there shouldnt be a problem then.

ow, maybe i should tell,.. at school, i like charge up capasitors, and put them back.. so if anyone needs on.. ZAP :P
(ow, and changing polarity of ELCO's is also pretty fun ^^ )
 
yea im with him ^^^^^, or run over it with a truck, or hit it with a baseball bat, or drop it into the pool (when nobody is in it)
