Beginner Motherboard Recommendations?

Hi, I've long been fascinated with the idea of building my own PC from scratch and I've finally decided to take the plunge. I've read up on countless articles describing how you build a PC and, from what I hear others say, it's really not that difficult, albeit, it can be daunting for a newcomer.

I'm no hardware/techie guru by any means, however, I feel that I am capable of accomplishing this task. But I need some help on deciding on the necessities, mainly, the motherboard. So I come to you for help.

I've been browsing NewEgg and I've come accross several that I think are pretty good, but I'd like to get some advice/recommendations from others with far more experiance in this field than I have.

Anyways, here are my picks:

Well, those are the ones that I've been leaning towards , but, by all means, please recommend your own that you had a simple and rewarding experiance with.

By the way, if you know some good motherboards with good documentation/latest BIOS or anything else which makes the set-up process easier, that's and added plus.

Thank you, your help is very much appreciated.

What processer are you planning on getting, ebcause two of those are AMD 939's and one of those is a intel 478?

And what video card do you plan on getting because on is AGP only one is PCI-E only and the other is AGP and PCI-E?

I'm quite partial to AMD but I'm not really sure why. My friend says they're better so, without knowing a whole lot about the function of either processor, I'm taking his word for it.

I'm thinking of installing a pretty decent graphics card, relatively new. Maybe the 6800 or some other equivalent ATI card.

Again this is my first computer that I intend to build, so I'm not really interested in building a hardcore gaming rig right off the bat. If I feel like upgrading later, then I will have the option to doo so. S for this reason, I'm leaning more and more to the PCI-E and AGP. It seems to have more options in terms of being upgraded.

yea, go with the asus. amd does have a slight edge over intel, only because they sell equivalent things for less. the reason why you might hear somebody argue that intel is better is simply because they have a bigger reputation, a long history, and generally, they have the market cornered. just like microsoft and linux: its hard to argue which is better when windows is in 9 out of ever 10 households.

Is Asus pretty dependable?

Also, do motherboards you buy on NewEgg come with all the screws and standoffs, original documentation, and wires?

Also, do most video cards now days come with their own fan and need to be plugged into the motherboard?

Again, thanks.

Oh, is the Athlon FX faster and better than the Athlon 64 or Athlon X2?

Only in some applications a FX-57 would beat a X2 in games but not in multitasking and a Athlon wouldn't keep up with a FX in anything.

Asus is a very good company and yes it does come with all of the screws and books off newegg.
The only thing with this board is that it doesn't have built in firewire but other then that it's a good board. Another good company for mother boards it Abit and also MSI.

i would go for the AMD 64 socket 939, i had a pentium 4 2.4ghz before i built my own computer with a socket 939 AMD athlon 3200+ 64 and i must say the performance difference is alot and my Pentium was clocked at 2.4ghz and the AMD is clocked at 2.0 ghz and its much faster.:)

Thanks guys, looks like I'll get the Asus. From the general concensus, it appears like it's a good one.

Just need to find a case now...

Asus all the way. But if you got the money to spend go for abit fatal1ty a8n sli that is if your willing to spend 200-270 bucks. it supports x2 fx and athlon chips and it comes with guru panel that tell you the temp overclock speed etc.

asus is terrible imo. WORST customer support barnone. terrible experience with 2 doa boards and customer support hung up on me twice. i would strongly suggest steering away from asus.

Hehe phone support is bad everywhere :P Buit then again with an ASUS board you've got a better chance that you dont need tech support anyways

@TEkster: what are you going to be doing with the box and what's the budget
