Besides gaming, what else is a vid card good for?

Everybody wants me to get a card like a 4870, or GTX260. But both are over $200 (+s/h). I play Empire Earth and Command and Conquer, albeit rarely with my schedule. I don't watch tv or HD movies on my computer. Why should I get a fancy card when I believe an HD 4670 ($80) will suit my needs just fine?

You don't need it if you believe its "overkill" for your needs. But to answer the question in the title, video cards are used also for graphic intensive programs, such as Auto-CAD, CAD key, Photoshop, Song Vegas, etc.

Excellent reply as I (aka we) will be using graphics programs like photoshop and ACAD. Will an HD 4670 handle those programs well? I have room to spend an extra $25 and get a GeForce 9800 GT. Would that be worth the extra money?

Any card that meets the minimum requirements for photoshop will be able to handle it. The better your GPU, the faster it will be able to render, etc. Also take your RAM and CPU into consideration.

Photoshop quality depends on the GPU?? I thought it was just for 3D redering, which photoshop edits pictures in 2D. You can also use the GPU to fold for F@H
