Best 2010 antivirus software for my pc

Hi,
I upgraded recently to AVG version 9, and I can say that I'm very unhappy with it. I don't know what causes this, but since I installed it the sound became very choppy when the HDD is working, also it is never idle, and windows reports that it did 44 GB of file read/write operations during few hours since it was opened (11 gb in the last hour)... Also youtube HD works horrible, and a 5 mins HQ video take like half an hour to download.
The processor usage oscilates from 20% to 80% when idle...

So I want to change it. I need an antivirus that does it's job properly, and uses very few system resources, and when I say very few, I mean the difference between the speed of the computer with and without it to be unnoticeable.

Here are my specs:
Intel P4, 3.06GHz
1.5 GB of RAM (1 x 1GB + 1 x 512 MB)
160 GB Samsung HDD
Ati Radeon 9550 vcard

I don't care if it's free or payed, I want it to protect me from viruses. I prefer an 'Internet Security' version.
So, what do you suggest?

Hmm.... that's strange. I also had the same version and i never had those problems. Anyways the best one you can get is ESET NOD 32 Smart Security ( it's not free though ). It's one of the best internet securities out there and it doesnt intervene with your computer performance.

I've got the full version of AVG 9.0 Internet Security too. it was running on own pentium 4 machine for a while, and it was horrible. on my current machine, it barely makes a difference, if any at all.

Sorry to say it, but the pentium 4 is just too old. :o

Sorry I forgot to say that I'm using windows xp :D.

I have really weird problems because since I installed this version... Even a BSOD.
Looks like I'll try that MS Security Essentials, will come back if I still have trouble.

Update: Apparently the computer works much better with MSE, and also the internet speed is much higher, HD vids on Youtube buffer much faster than they were working yesterday in standard quality.

I've now upgraded from XP to W7 and had / have AVG9 on both OS's. With XP it was terrible, the boot would take forever with the desktop waiting for AVG to finish initialising and AVG would thrash the hard disc with high CPU readings.

With W7 AVG quickly does it's stuff way before the desktop appears and uses hardly any CPU resources at all, updating is not so apparent now and it seems to be taking advantage of the better written OS.

I've heard good stuff about MS Security Essentials so when AVG licence expires I'll probably move over to that.

It works well, and already detected a virus, but it was detected by AVG as well. Apparently all trouble is gone, the PC works well.

Thanks for help everyone.
