Best 775 Mobo £90ish

Hi I'm slowly going to upgrade my system, starting with mobo/memory then hdd, cpu then gfx card and psu! I can't afford to do it all at once which is why I need to keep the mobo 775!

My current set up is almost 3 years old now (P5B, E6400, X1950GT) I'm intending to get a Q9550 and whatever GFX card is best price at the time (think HD4890 range). I would also like to install win7 on this build.

I have found a Gigabyte GA-EP45 UD3R for just over £90 is that the best board at this price range? Not bothered about about crossfire/sli or DDRIII!

Have you considered going with AM3 or AM2+? Going intel 775 is like buying a car with 500k miles, good for now but pretty much near the end. Socket 775 will leave you no ruoute to upgrade, as intel is EOL'ing is. Phenom II's are roughly the same as far as performance, are cheaper, and far better as far as compatibility in the future as they are the current AMD sockets.

I'm open to any suggestions. The Q9550 and the GA-EP45 UD3R are roughly £250, what AMD combo would you suggest for that price range (or preferably less if it's AMD). The only reason I went with intel is because my last (and first build) was when the core2duos were out and AMD couldn't match it back then!

Depends on what memory you want:

DDR3 mobo:

Also, speaking of the HD4890 you mentioned in your original post, i would recommend it over the comparable nvidia cards. Mainly because all these motherboards support crossfire over SLI, but also that they overclock like a beast, and meet/beat the nvidia competition(GTX275) for less money, and are great cards;)

(Personally speaking, for motherboards i prefer gigabyte over asus as gigabyte tends to keep their bios's more up to date)

Also, if you want todays latest and greatest from intel, might wanna check i7. Overclockers.co.uk has the 920 for around 200, and there is a gigabyte mobo for around 135. A bit more than 775 or phenom II, but its pretty much the best cpu (currently) out.

Yow thats a fast cpu! I'm going to have to rethink everything now! Do I/will I really need DDRIII? It'll save me a few quid if I don't get it...but then...it's newer and better which makes me want it anyway! AAaaaaargh! thanks bomberboysk

DDR3 would be socket AM3, and some newer cpu's might be AM3 only. I would recommend going with AM3 and ddr3, not old because it would be faster, but because it would also increase future compatibility;)

That's a horrible analogy.

A good analogy for the 775 socket would be like buying 2006 Corvette, with zero miles on it.

The technology is older, not "used" as you suggest. You make it sound like a brand new build
will stop working soon.

I'm tired of seeing people hammering on the 775, touting "upgradeablility" for the AM3. Who cares?
Yes, the Core 2's are a bit pricey, but that's the only
argument I see.

In terms of performance, there's nothing wrong with building a Core 2 Quad system because you're
not going to get a faster setup with AM3. Just the same performance for less money.

Totally agree with bodaggit. Some people prefer Intel because they had some problems with AMD or vise versa. Doesn't mean that they are gonna stop making 775's means they are bad or used. As mentioned, you can find a discontinued car with 0 miles, never used and great performance. Just look at the new Radeon 4770. The more outdated 9800 GT beats it almost in every aspect.

I don't see upgrading mobo necessary. P965 chipset could support Q9550.

If you want to get new mobo, I suggest you upgrade with AMD AM3 or wait for Core i5
I think the first thing you do is get a better video card at this moment. Then get mobo + CPU when have money

Thanks for all the posts people, I have never had an amd before so i think it will be exciting to try out what bomberboysk suggested (although we all agree the car analogy wasn't the best ;) ) out of the following mobos which do you think is best I can't find any reviews for the Giga one!?! Also what hsf would you all suggest I have a Freezer Pro 7 for my current Intel setup would the AMD version be just as good/cheap?

Gigabyte GA-MA790X-UD3P
ASUS M4A78-E 790GX

It supports AMD and Intel socket 775 and comes with a Fan Mate 2 and thermal paste. Comes with everything for every socket it supports. only thing not included is a screwdriver. Don't use the thermal paste it comes with, get some Arctic Silver 5.
But it doesn't say anything about supporting qauds, so check if it does. I only have a dual-core...

Go with the gigabyte mobo, and like bomber said: they update their BIOS'es more often.

Freezer 7 is a great "cheap" heatsink.

Second, i was trying to think of an analogy that would show its not upgradeable. I think the Renault avantime would be a good analogy, considering only 435 were sold in Britain, and the aftermarket is probably pretty poor for them.

Thanks for everything people! I am now going to wait to see if the i5 comes out in a month or two to see if AMD drop their prices and then try to bag a bargain!

Really? what quarter next year? That might be a little bit too long! Hopefully AMD will lower their prices before it comes out to shift as many cpus as possible!

If you look at the i5 thread in off topic (i think) you'll see that someone has tested them and apparently they blow the C2Q's and Phenoms out of the water. waiting would be a good idea but prices may be expensive, i'm not too sure.

They look pretty good! To be honest I think the 3.2 x4 Phenom will be enough of a power boost from my E6400 for me and if i can get it cheaper that'd be amazing! One Question about AM2+ mobo and an AM3 processor will it work straight out of the box? I read you have to Flash the BIOS how do i flash the bios without an older AM2 processor?
