Best/Easiest Method to Test your Laptop's Hardware?

I know there are a bunch of programs out there, and built in tools within Windows to test your hardware, but I was wondering if anyone could suggest the best way to test all your hardware on your PC for issues? Should you just use the built in tools in Windows? Or should I download some software instead? I have to test out a few laptops so I was just trying to figure out the best and easiest way to do this and I have never actually done this before. Thanks in advance for any help:)

Thanks John! I really liked the information about using HD Sentinel software for the hard drive. I will probably use that for my SSDs and regular hard drives to test their health. Or do you think that the built in error checking test in Windows is sufficient for hard drives? For example, in Windows 7 you can just right click the hard drive icon and go to properities, then tools, then Error-checking to check the hard drive. Is that sufficient to check hard drive health?

For a standard hard drive, you would want to use the hard drive manufactures disk diagnostic program to check for errors or issues. As far as SSD's go, I'm not sure if every maker has a drive utility for them.
