Best free remote access and desktop control program?

im looking for a remote access and desktop control program mainly to be used so i can help out a few friends with there pc problems from my own desktop..since they dont always explain or listen to well i think doing it remotely would be the best option besides actually going to there houses

im looking for the best application out there that is free that i can do this with

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

teamviewer or crossloop

Darn, you guys beat me to it:D
TeamViewer is the best if you're accessing computers over the Internet, because other remote access programs such as Remote Desktop and the various VNC programs have to have a VPN set up, which can be hard as you have to forward ports on your router(s). TeamViewer works through firewalls, and if you must use another remote access program it can make a VPN connection as well. And you can send a person an e-mail with a link to the stand-alone app that gives them a number to send back to you so you can connect-and it's easy for the other person to run. I highly recommend this program, I use it every day to access my F@H rigs.

Been quite awhile. I use it to help friends with their issues. The person who needs help clicks on actions then request remote assistance from their friend

@Drenlin: I'll be he's confusing the "Share you desktop" thing. It works a little like Remote Desktop, you just have to allow the other person to control it. It's very inefficient, as there has to be another person at the other end to allow the first person to control the desktop. At least that's the way it was with NetMeeting.

But it is what he was asking for. He wants to help his friends with their issues.
It's FREE.
I'd be a fool to let someone have access to my comp if I wasn't there and so would you.

And if you tell him about apps he can install and use without the other person being there I'm sure that may be against the rules as it can be used for not so nice reasons.

With TeamViewer the partner has to give you their TV ID and password before you can connect if you haven't set it up for permanent access. With Remote Desktop, you have to know the username and password to one of the accounts on the remote computer.

The Live Messenger one isn't called remote desktop. It's called remote assistance.
You don't need user name or password.
The friend sends the invite, You accept and then it connects.
If you and your friend already have Live Messenger why install more software?
I'm just saying this in case the OP and his friends are MSN buddies.

Remote Assistance, huh? Heard that it has a issue where hackers can get in via that protocol. And Windows 7 users have to download Messenger. TeamViewer is a much better product, imo, with a whole lot more features.
