Best hardware for video editing

Hi
I'm new to this forum so apologies if this is covered elsewhere.
I'm going to be buying a new desktop sometime over the next few months. Will be using it for all the standard low level stuff (emails, web surfing etc) with the exception of video editing. I'm not looking to be the next Speilberg, I just want to edit footage (holiday stuff and the like) from my digital camcorder (it is a flash card camcorder - but will connect to anything via USB). Once edited (link together scenes, add titles, maybe add soundtrack) I'll want to put it on DVD for playback in a standard DVD player.
Can anyone recommend the key indicators I should look for to ensure I get the best performace (with a budget of under £500/$1,000)?
I know everyone will say more of everything, but should I be looking for:
  1. fastest processor speed
  2. dual or quad core
  3. biggets RAM
  4. best graphics card
  5. biggest hard drive????
any advice would be much appreciated.

[*]best graphics card (They say NVidia has a good picture quality, but I say go for the ATI 4870)

Who said that?
As far as my understanding, ATI is always win for better picture quality, while Nvidia for faster FPS...

Are you buying one or building one yourself?
You are in UK?
Is that £500 need to include Monitor & speakers?
 
You don't really need that good of a video card for video editing. A midrange ATI card will suffice.

As for processor, I'd go quad core, especially if you're like me who constantly have photoshop up along with whatever video editing program I use.

For RAM I'd go 4 gigs just to be safe, it's not like they're that expensive nowadays. And yes you'd need a large, fast, hard drive, especially if you want to save a lot of videos.

I intend to buy one - I don't have the skills to build one!!
I'm in the UK
£500 is for the base only - I've got all the othwer bits and pieces.
