Hi, im looking to possibly replace my XFX 790i ultra (which has given me nothing but problems), this afternoon will be the deciding point as to whether or not I will get something new. With that in mind I need a place to put my E8400 - Im looking for a solid board, something easy to use (I loved the phoenix BIOs with the 790) and thats very memory friendly, the 790i is not very keen to which memory you place in it.

Also the best reccomended memory to go with the board, I will be getting new RAM to go with it as well.

was thinking about http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductReview.aspx?Item=N82E16813131600

E8400 is a great choice, as it is cheap and very overclockable.
If you think of overclokcing your PC, get ASUS P5E Deluxe as your motherboard, mount Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 and for memory buy CORSAIR TWIN 2 X 2GB-8500C5D DDR2 1066MHz DC CL5 for even better overclocking and system stability.

i was trying to stay in the realm of DDR3 as far as mobos go, but i wouldnt mind spending less cash for a more stable ddr2 build

1066MHz is currently second fastest DDR2 memory, just after overclocked which reaches up to 1200MHz. The RAM I gave you is Dual-Channel, which means that it can be faster and more stable than some DDR3s and it's a good match for E8400 as it gives you more pleasent overclocks. To your CPU you can invest in Scythe Mugen which is a monster comparing to some Zalman CPU Coolers. In overclocking your E8400 won't sweat at all with that cooling.

As to DDR2 RAM memory, you can also go for:
OCZ Reaper HPC 2x2GB DDR2 1066MHz PC2-8500 - around $120
Kingston HyperX KHX8500D2K2 2x2GB DDR2 1066MHz - around $122
