Best operating system?

lol, less than a day. i've run it for a few weeks continuosly...and im trying to break that record now with a 24/7 F@H rig. hopefully XP will last...sometimes it just slows down for no reason, but not lately.
 
lol i've left my downstairs computer on for monrths at a time and it doesn't randomly crash, it just slows down cause sometimes automatic antivirus kicks in or windows update starts up. I havn't done a cold restart for a looong time. As for my good computer i dont leave it on (its too loud) but it never freezes, not including the time i put in defective memory.
 
Have had my computer run for more than a week. Unfortunately, my isp had some error, so I couldn't use internet. Figured I could let my machine rest a bit after that. Haven't tried a long run since. Got bills to worry about. ;)

Someone said XP is a graphical disaster. I disagree, I like a lot of graphics and stuff. :D

The "best" OS is probably dependant on what you want to use it for. Linux is good for some stuff, while Windows is better at others.
If I only had time to learn to tweak the graphics and ui of some Linux, and play the games I wanted without any fuss, I would probably run that. It's simply more flexible for personal touches. Changing background images just doesn't cut it. ;)
 
i disable almsot all graphics/improvements that XP offers, my desktop looks almost exactly like tweaker's, jsut a classic XP theme, no bakcground, but i have 3-4 icons.
 
One of my friends have no icons at all. Just a big picture of some ugly car. :S
Can't see how. I have literally hundreds of icons on my desktop (high resolution ftw).

longest for me was 9 days, but i shut it down cause i didnt feel like wasting any more electricity or putting un-necessary wear on the parts in my comp. But it would have lasted a long time if i let it, and if your longest is less then a day, then something is seriously wrong with your comp or what you have installed on it.
 
There is nothing PHYSICAL/LOGICALLY wrong with the PC/SOFTWARE.

Updates are available.. PLEASE RESTART YOUR COMPUTER FOR THE CHANGES TO TAKE EFFECT. During XP's set-up it says that RE-BOOTS are a thing of the past.
CRASHES can be handled without rebooting.

With 9x/ME, I had loads of options ready to run by clciking on a BATCH file, and the
option to create my own START-UP options. XP doesn't support the CHOICE command
anymore!!!

The other day I inserted a floppy, but it was damaged, XP said the disk was unformatted. After rebooting with a DOS disk, I used NDD to discover that there was
actually three documents on the FLOPPY... The ROOT-DIR was damaged. I managed to
read the FLOPPY SECTORS with NORTON's DISKEDIT, and saved the DATA.

XP wont let you PHYSICALLY access DEVICES directly with a simple DEBUG command.
(I do Know about SCRIPTING).

(OS/2 is pretty good but IBM is another huge company that takes too long to make a decision and when they finally do, the industry has already taken another step forward leaving them a step behind)

The best operating system is obviously one that you write yourself...It does exactly what you want to do, how you want to do it.

XP has already cost me a motherboard and 2 dvd burners, because of it's continuous
"This program hazzz... and needs to close. SEND REPORT....

There's more to annex than playing games.
 
Linux is undoubtedly the best OS, when customized. It does take a little time getting used to, but then it's great! Reccommend: SuSE.

wow! 600 posts! it was just a week ago or two i was at 500! starting to get active.

Are you trying to say that windows XP broke your motherbored and 2 DVD burners? because that would make me lamo
