Best option for AGP 4x on my computer? Appreciate any suggestions.

Being a real "noob" about these things, I recently discovered that I have an AGP port in my computer as well as the PCI ports I knew about. It is AGP4x. Whatever that means. What would be a good option for me when upgrading from my old video card. Nvidia GeForce4 MX 440. Ancient and bad, I know.

Are ANY current AGP cards compatible with AGP4x? If not, can someone suggest one that would be good for my system? With the "4x" listed for my computer and all. I know there are things like 8x and such.

Sorry for my simple understanding of this and thank you for you help!

If you can give me a name and number, I'll look it up.

Edit: If you responded to my previous post, thanks- discovering stuff for the win.

I'm pretty sure that all AGP cards will work in an AGP slot, but if it's only a X4 slot, it'd have a smaller bandwidth because most AGP cards are X8... At least that's what I think?

AGP 8x cards are 8x/4x compatible. They simply backstep to the 4x boards. Likewise a 4x/2x model would backstep to an old 2x/1x board. Cards are made this way so you can easily use a new AGP model on an old system as a replacement card.

Ah, perfect. I'll make my purchase tomorrow. If I have about 120 bucks what would you guys say I should aim for? A low end series 8 Nvidia? or do they even make those as AGPs?

The low to mid range cards will generally see only a few brands carrying AGP type cards at this point in time. PCI-Express is the common type with some DX capatible ATI models like the Radeon HD 2600 Pro being an AGP model there. For XP you can shop around now for good deals on both NVidia and ATI driven AGP models that won't see a large draw on power like a high end model would.

For about $120 you can go for the latest ATI DX10 compatible model or simply throw a low priced older model in like the Daimond Radeon 9550 128mb model seen at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814103162 That would be a cost sdaver there until eventually going into a much newer system altogether.

For $104.99 the Sapphire Radeoan HD 2600Pro is seen at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102709 This would be Vista ready since DX10 is found in the new version only.
