I just recently got my hands on a slightly older hp notebook. It only has 128 mb of ram and runs at 800 Mhz. I currently run xp on my desktop, but i can also get my hands on a version of linux. I plan on using this notebook for mainly internet browsing, and that's about it. What Os would you suggest i load onto the notebook. If linux is going to the more effeicient system, would it be possible to connect to the local network i have setup if all the other computers are xp?

I recommend Windows for gaming, and general usage of certain applications.

I recommend Linux for server management and internet activity.

For you I'd recommend you go for Linux.

Being only a 800Mhz & 128MB of RAM, winxp may run abit slow. You could try Win2000 if you can get hold of it... doesnt require as much system resourses.

LOL! Im running a PII 266mhz with 64 mb of ram with XP. Before I was running windows 2000, which was painfully slow, while XP runs at a very good speed. I suggest windows XP.

Hmmm

I would lean towards XP for several reasons. The main one being Linux a very good OS but pretty hard to set up properly for someone who has not used it. You may also find that some of the programs you would like only come for Windows. I do think, however, that Linux would be better given the specs of your PC. Oh well...

If you know Linux well or are just willing to learn and perhaps put up with a bit of beginners frustration then Linux does make for a nice operating system which is fairly safe without any virus protection.

Windows XP will run pretty well on that system though but Norton 2003 and higher will slow it down a bit though.

If it where me I'd prob. install windows XP on it as it should run just fine.

Hmm... I recommend you to use Linux for browsing only, since it's safety on the net and quite faster if your requirement is minimum. but if you are a gamer, it's better to use Windows XP which give you compatibility on most games.
have a nice day!!!

download knoppix and burn the iso to a disk, its a livecd so you can tryout linux and go on internet, but it doesnt change or add anything to the hard drive, it also has the option of a hd install, which you can get instructions to do so online, but make sure the instructons are for the current version.
link to download latest knoppix: (needs to be translated to english, there is a button on the top left, choose download, click on a server that has http, and one close to you, then choose the latest iso, choose the version 6.7 i think, the 6.8 is a very small file, i dont know why, it should say 699mb to the right, download it, burn the iso to a cd using nero or alcohol or something, then put it in the cd drive, restart computer
